YahELite Tutorials

Welcome! This site primarily focuses on providing tutorials for YahELite, the most popular third party chat client for Yahoo. Newcomers to the internet should note that words that link to other pages will change color as you move your mouse over them. The menu on the left will expand (when you click a button) to show direct links to pages. The top button on the menu toggles all the menu items open and closed. It will also open a search box that will seach for words contained in the buttons. The dragon graphic in the corner will bring you 'home' when clicked.

As you read the tutorials you might notice that your version of YahELite may differ slightly in appearence or content to the graphics on the pages. YahELite is constantly being updated with cosmetic changes as well as additional features, but I trust the tutorials presented here will help you get comfortable using and exploring the many options of YahELite.

BTW: I highly recommend using FIREFOX when you surf the internet!

While there have been many positive changes in Yahoo lately, there are often many Yahoo glitches, a page has been created to point out some of the changes and suggest workarounds. It also explains the changes implemented in YahELite to keep chat turning as smoothly as possible considering the state Yahoo is in. The WorkArounds Page is a work in progress, updated only when serious glitches are occuring.

Yahoo has implemented the captcha feature in chat. They are requiring captcha verifications when you log into chat and each time you change rooms. Please update to version 318 (or higher) as the lower versions lower than 317 will not allow you to log in. To streamline the process of entering rooms, has incorporated the captcha graphic in a human-user friendly manner. After submitting a successful captcha answer, you may change rooms for about 5 minutes without having to answer another captcha. Screenshots and a walk though of how it works is available on the CAPTCHA tutorial page.

New Features: Yahoo discontinued the goto command to allow you to go to any user, but YahELite's new feature allows you to advertise the room you are in to make it easy for your friends to join you. Only people who have you on their friend's list will be able to see it. If a friend is displaying the room they are in, you can click their status notification to join their room. Learn all about it on the new goto page. ( www.customcodes.com/tutorial/goto.php )

Note to Vista Users:
Check the forum for advice on using voice with VISTA.

The ACER computer we bought to do VISTA development on, experienced hardware failure three months after we purchased it. Best Buy's Geek Squad DESTROYED the computer while swapping out parts and so far neither Best Buy or Acer have been helpful in our quest to have it replaced. If you are thinking of buying a new computer, please be advised that I have lost all faith in Acer and Best Buy and would not recommend supporting them in any way. Needless to say testing development on Vista has been placed on hold.

A page to help the newcomers to chat has been added to the Miscellaneous Section of the tutorial. It contains a list of some of the common abbreviations and terms used in chat.

For The Curious:
For those wondering what folding@home project is: Folding at home is a Stanford University distributed computing project that is doing research on how proteins behave. By downloading and running the software, you will be aiding research on cancer, brain disorders such as Alzheimers and Huntingtons and a myriad of other things. Best of all one does not have to understand all the science behind the research to feel good about helping in the search for a cure to many devistating diseases. Everyone is invited to join the YahELite folding at home team or the software can be downloaded and points tabulated without a team affiliation. It can even be run anonymously! More information and links to the project are located at www.yahelite.org/fah.

Happy Chatting!
